Panel I originated as a floor-based work and became the first in a series of panel studies centred on materials that continue to change and remain responsive to environmental conditions. The work brings together copper, calcium chloride, Jesmonite, and translucent surfaces to explore the contrast between the different scales of time and form at which materials, the human body, and the environment operate. Its surface acts as a site of accumulation, collecting traces of memory, change, decay, and observation like a fragile skin or archive. Rather than existing as a fixed image, the work develops through the ongoing cooperation between material and its outside, where absorption, reaction, and exposure continue to shape its form. In this way, Panel I holds stillness and momentum together, allowing an inner movement to remain present on the surface.
